Cinque Secondi, directed by Paolo Virzì, centers on Adriano Sereni (Valerio Mastandrea), a gruff, solitary man who lives in the renovated stables of Villa Guelfi, an ancient, decaying, and nearly forgotten estate. His life is monotonous—spent amid the smoke of his Tuscan cigar and a deep indifference toward the world around him, marked by repetitive gestures and uneventful days.
One day, he discovers that the nearby villa has been taken over by a group of young students and recent graduates, who devote themselves with energy and determination to reviving the countryside and the abandoned vineyards. The arrival of these intruders annoys him, and he soon considers driving them away by any means necessary. But among them is Matilde (Galatea Bellugi), the granddaughter of the last Count Guelfi. She grew up there and worked alongside her grandfather in the vineyards, learning both the patience and the harshness of the land.
Matilde becomes curious about Adriano and his past. She begins to observe him closely, wondering why a man like him lives there alone, rejecting all forms of social contact—as if guarding a secret.
With the arrival of spring, and later summer, the conflict between Adriano and the young newcomers slowly turns into a forced coexistence that unexpectedly blossoms into a fragile and surprising alliance…
