Synopsis
L'Oro del Reno, directed by Lorenzo Pullega, is set in the picturesque landscape of Emilia-Romagna, where the Reno River flows—a river that shares its name with the legendary German river featured in Wagner’s opera Das Rheingold.
Mistakenly believed by Japanese Wagner enthusiasts to be the inspiration behind the opera, the Italian Reno becomes the unlikely protagonist of an unusual and almost surreal journey. A young filmmaker, commissioned by a local association to celebrate the wonders of the river, embarks on an adventure from its Apennine source to its Adriatic mouth, crossing overlooked yet fascinating landscapes. What begins as a simple assignment soon transforms into a Wagnerian quest in search of hidden treasures and unexpected stories suspended between myth and reality.
Initially reluctant, the director encounters a memorable cast of characters along the way: eccentric countesses, Sunday kayakers, retired partygoers, solitary boatmen, and desperate brides. As he gathers stories from the past and present, the journey becomes a reflection on the profound connection between humanity and nature, revealing a river that holds a collective memory beyond the boundaries of time and place.
The search for gold becomes a metaphor: it is everywhere—in the smallest details, in the stories, in the encounters—waiting to be discovered by those who know how to see it.
